Entrepreneurs and fellow founders, I’m finding that the intensity of my passion to work on my business varies on a daily basis. Some days I think I’m on top of the world, and other days, I question whether I’m going in the right direction. In talking with other small business owners, I am finding that these feelings and thoughts are completely normal. I’m not the only crazy one after all!
This week, I had an epiphany: I need to maintain a healthy sense of desperation. Go with me here; to be “desperate” can mean a lot of things. If you check out the definition of “desperate” on Dictionary.com, the kind of desperation I’m referring to is:
having an urgent need, desire, etc.: desperate for attention; desperate to find a job.
It is that critical urgency, that unstoppable drive, that insatiable hunger that fuels my desire to keep going – on both the good and bad days. But I have to keep it up regardless of where I’m at. Otherwise, the innovation stops, the networking events stay unattended, the website gets neglected, etc. I’ve got to do what it takes to keep it up: giving myself an emotional kick in the butt, having a member of my “tribe” give me a reality check.
How do you keep yourself motivated when business isn’t quite going your way? I’d love to hear your thoughts below.
